Welcome to Mapping Light, Shaping Color

North Lake fall morning – by author

I’ve been pursuing landscape and other forms of photography for some time, enjoying both the process of shooting in the field and the technical side of post-processing. Of all aspects of processing, I’ve found color to be the most challenging, and over time I’ve worked to refine a more systematic approach. Given my technical background, I’ve found it most effective to understand Photoshop’s tools at a deeper, mathematical level—an approach that seems largely absent from most available resources.

On this site, I’ll do my best to share my learnings with those who’d like to understand processing tools at this deeper level. It is not intended to be a tutorial site, and most of this content assumes an audience with a high level of expertise with Photoshop, including layer masks, blend modes, luminosity mask, and various adjustment effects.

Over time, I plan to cover the following material

  • Tonally balanced 16 bit luminosity masks
  • 16 bit color range masks using channel math
  • Blendif color range masking
  • Color processing with the Channel Mixer
    • Superior saturation control
    • Hue rotation
    • Color grading
  • High precision luminosity masks without plugins
    • Gamma skewed masks
    • Symmetric masks
  • Gradient maps for color grading
  • Single layer 16-bit luminosity masks using gradient maps
  • Dodge and burn best practices pros and cons
    • Soft light, Linear light, Symmetric Versus Skewed Masks
  • Regional Dodge and Burn with gradient maps
  • And various other topics as needed

The goal of this site is not just to demonstrate techniques, but to understand them at a deeper level—so they can be applied with precision, consistency, and intent to create high quality images.
